DESCRIPTION:For the second seminar of Lent Term\, the Cambridg
 e Screen Media Group is delighted to welcome (back
 ) Prof. Keith Reader\, who will be discussing the 
 place of cultural topography in film.\n\nProf. Rea
 der works on various aspects of twentieth-century 
 French culture. He has published a monograph on Ro
 bert Bresson and one on Jean Renoir's La Règle du 
 jeu. He recently finished an article on Resnais's 
 L'année dernière à Marienbad as sado-masochistic t
 ext - an approach that incorporates his interest i
 n critical theory and gender studies. The latter a
 pproach largely underpins his monograph\, coauthor
 ed with Rachel Edwards\, on The Papin Sisters\, an
 d even more markedly his study of male (self-)abje
 ction The Abject Object.\n\nHis current project bu
 ilds on a developing interest in the area of cultu
 ral topography\, by way of a cultural history of t
 he Bastille/Faubourg Saint-Antoine area of Paris. 
 The range of texts here extends from canonical lit
 erature (Hugo's Les Miserables) and theory (Benjam
 in's Paris: capitale du XIXe siecle)\, through the
  detective novel (Leo Malet)\, film (Klapisch's Ch
 acun cherche son chat\, Pialat's Police) and less-
 explored areas still such as chanson and bande des
 sinée. \n\nThe session starts at 5 for 5.15 and wi
 ll be followed by a Q&A.\n\nAll welcome\, no regis
 tration required.\n\nThis talk is organised by the
