DESCRIPTION:Software bloat is excessive resource consumption d
ue to unused (or\nunnecessary) generality present
in code\, especially in large framework based Java
applications. In this talk\, we will briefly pres
ent some background\, then discuss how system bott
lenecks and hardware energy proportionality determ
ine the effects of bloat on power consumption.\nWe
will next discuss newer compiler techniques to mi
tigate bloat. We will end with a brief discussion
on the challenges in automatic detection of bloat
in large applications. This is a joint work with S
uparna Bhattacharya\, Karthick Rajamani and Manish
  Gupta.\n\nBio: Prof. K. Gopinath graduated from I
IT-Madras with a B.Tech. degree and from Universit
y of Wisconsin\, Madison with an MS in Computer Sc
ience.\nAfter working at Advanced Micro Devices as
a Product Planning Engineer\, he joined Stanford
 University for a Ph.D.(completed '88).\nAfter a br
ief stint as a PostDoc at Stanford and then at Sun
Microsystems Labs\, he joined IISc as a faculty i
n 1990 where he is now a Professor. His research
interests are primarily in the computer systems ar
ea (Operating Systems\, Storage Systems\, Computer
  Systems Security\, Software Verification).\n\n
