DESCRIPTION:Classical Hodge theory says that the sheaves of ex
terior\ndifferentials control the usual Betti coho
 mology of a smooth complex\nprojective variety X.
Is there a similar relation between the sheaves of
\nsymmetric differentials and the topology of X? I
n this talk I will explain\nhow symmetric differen
tials control finite dimensional representations o
f\nthe topological fundamental group of X. Using a
utomorphic forms this leads\nto new striking rigid
ity properties for fundamental groups of certain b
 all\nquotients.
