DESCRIPTION:Declarations of war characterised the opening of w
arfare in Europe until the twentieth century. Toda
y we regard this practice to belong to an age of w
armongers and militarists. These conflicting views
on declarations of war are already reflected in H
ugo Grotius' famous treatise on the law of war\, t
he De Jure Belli ac Pacis\, first published in 162
 5. Grotius\, a Dutch scholar (1583-1645)\, held th
at a sovereign nation may lawfully declare and wag
e war against another nation\, for instance in pur
suit of territorial aggrandizement. At the same ti
me\, he considered such a war immoral and sinful.
My talk will briefly discuss the two rival traditi
ons to which these conflicting views belong and ex
plain the synthesis that Grotius sought to establi
sh between human law on the one hand and morality
and divine law on the other. \n\n
