DESCRIPTION:The visit to art exhibitions is characterised by a
  peculiar\, easily recognisable organisation: visi
tors stand and silently look at works of art\, the
n slowly turn and move\, mostly without saying a w
ord\, from one exhibit to the next. This organisat
ion of the withdrawal from an exhibit allows visit
ors to walk through galleries without disturbing c
ompanions or other people's appreciation of works
of art. Visitors as well as academic researchers l
argely take this organisation for granted\, and at
tribute its origin to social conventions as well a
s to the architecture and layout of exhibitions. T
his presentation offers a different perspective on
the organisation of the navigation of museum exhi
bitions. By drawing on an inspection of video-reco
rdings of people's navigation of art museums the a
nalysis examines how people organise the withdrawa
l from an exhibit and the orientation to a next wi
thout interfering or disturbing each other's appre
ciation of exhibits. The presentation ends with a
brief discussion of how such detailed studies of a
ction and interaction may be used to inform the de
sign and deployment of technologies in museums and
  other public settings.
