DESCRIPTION:The directed propulsion of small scale objects in
water is problematic because of the combination of
low Reynolds number and strong thermal fluctuatio
ns at these length scales. I introduce simple prot
otypes of model low Reynolds number swimmers and e
xamine their physical properties with and without
fluctuations. I also report on a number of recent
 experimental realizations of such devices.\nFinall
y\, I discuss the collective behavior of an array
of model microfluidic pumps\, and examine dynamica
l phenomena such as synchronization and (low Reyno
lds number) turbulent mixing\, with and without fl
 uctuations.\n
