DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Arctic reindeer live in an extreme visual envir
onment\, with months of relative darkness in winter and long periods of da
ylight in summer. Their visual environment is also relatively UV rich. The
se animals have evolved a unique method of living in this environment. Fi
rst\, they extend their visual sensitivity into the UV. Second\, they chan
ge the reflectance of their tapetum lucidum between seasons from gold to d
eep blue to increase photon capture during the dark winter. Reindeer in s
ub-Arctic regions do not switch the colour of their tapetum
