DESCRIPTION:Amartya Sen’s capability approach was originally d
eveloped as an alternative to resourced-based appr
oaches to the evaluation of advantage. The approa
ch draws on the works of Aristotle and John Rawls
and has achieved growing momentum as well as spark
ing debate in many disciplines associated with hum
an development. Key thinkers\, including philosop
her Martha Nussbaum\, have taken Sen’s ideas forwa
rd in diverse and controversial ways. The capabil
ity approach offers unique insights into the chall
enges of evaluating human development\, ideas of j
ustice and the assumptions which inform the kinds
of equalities and freedoms towards which societies
are striving.\n\nThe purpose of this initial meet
ing is to invite individuals who are interested in
the capability approach to come together to discu
ss how an interest group on capabilities can facil
itate understanding and applications of this appro
ach to human development. The group is potentiall
y of interest to those working in the fields of hu
 man development\, social justice\, transformative
education\, political participation and poverty re
duction. The group will be based in the Faculty o
f Education at the University of Cambridge but wel
comes those from disciplines and faculties beyond
education.\n\nOne strand of the group’s activities
may include a reading group to discuss key works
on the capability approach in the context of parti
cipants’ own research agendas. Another strand may
concentrate on developing new research proposals
drawing on the capability approach. We also hope
to host some seminars involving key thinkers in th
e field as well as offering the opportunity for gr
oup members to present their own work and ideas in
relation to the capability approach. \n\nFor fur
ther information please contact Caroline Hart\, em
