DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nTo gain a better understanding of arts e
ducation in the 21st century\, we must first expan
d the lens through which we view young people’s ar
tistic worlds. Drawing on a recent interview study
conducted by Research for Youth\, Music and Educa
tion (RYME)\, I explore the values\, quality of ch
aracter\, and personhood of young people’s artisti
c worlds in terms of their personal and social com
mitment to learning\, respect for others’ learning
 \, and valuing of innovation\, inspiration\, and m
ultidimensionality. I will present a transformativ
e theory for arts education that conceptualizes yo
ung people’s artistic worlds as zones of complexit
y involving expansive learning opportunities throu
gh media convergence culture\, and zones of contac
t involving interconnections through social media
and learning relationships. I argue that an evolut
ion in artistic learning has taken place that is c
apable of empowering learners and fostering autono
 my\, resiliency\, and life-long positive arts enga
 gement. \n\n\nBionotes\nSusan O’Neill is Associate
Professor in Arts Education at Simon Fraser Unive
rsity in Vancouver\, Canada. She is Director of Re
search for Youth\, Music and Education (RYME) and
Senior Editor of the Canadian Music Educators’ Bie
nnial Book Series\, Research to Practice. She has
published widely in music psychology and music edu
cation. She applies her multidisciplinary backgrou
nd (three separate graduate degrees in music\, edu
cation\, psychology) to the study of young people’
 s artistic beliefs and values\, youth-led particip
atory action research\, and the impact of youth mu
 sic engagement on motivation\, identity\, well-bei
ng\, media literacy\, and cultural understanding.
As a flutist\, she performs benefit concerts to ra
ise awareness of social justice issues with her hu
sband\, pianist Yaroslav Senyshyn. One of their jo
int recitals was recently released on CD\, Live at
Von Kuster Hall (Platon Promotions). \n
