DESCRIPTION:The often irrational role of moral disgust in judg
ment has received a great deal of research and con
troversy. I will present research from our lab arg
uing that disgust — or an emotional state identifi
ed by people as "disgust" — plays a key role in tr
acking the moral fitness of people's character\, r
eacting preferentially to situations that show bad
character without necessarily involving harmful c
onsequences. After presenting primary evidence for
this proposition\, and for parallel outcomes with
positive emotions that track character (e.g. Elev
ation)\, I will try to theoretically harmonize the
se findings to other research showing a bodily foc
us for moral disgust. Finally\, I will return to a
ddress the question of similarities among emotions
labelled "disgust\," presenting a review of cross
-cultural research that suggests a hidden emotion
class of character-tracking emotion given various
translations in various languages\, and distinct i
n its own way from core physical disgust and the b
ehavioural immune system.\n\nHost: Prof Simone Sch
nall \n\nThis talk will be recorded and uploaded t
o the Zangwill Club "Youtube channel":https://http
