DESCRIPTION:Rotordynamics is one of those topics within mechan
ical engineering dynamics and control that is ofte
n seen as a rather specialist topic. One has to wo
rry about multi-physics\, multiple co-ordinate sy
stems\, non-normal mass and stiffness matrices du
e to gyroscopic and other effects\, large transfer
s of energy between rotational and lateral degrees
of freedom and the experimental challenging of mo
nitor vibrations across the rotor-stator barrier.
In this talk I shall survey several areas of resea
rch in the fundamental nonlinear dynamics of rotat
ing mechanical systems. In particular\, I shall di
scuss work on dynamic autobalancer mechanisms and
on the dynamics of intermittent rub or contact. Fi
nally\, I shall discuss work with a novel Cambridg
 e-based SME\, Faraday Predictive\, who use model-b
ased current and voltage analysis for remote condi
tion monitoring of rotational machines. Much of t
his work is in collaboration with Mike Friswell an
d Alex Shaw at the Univeristy of Swansea.
