 versity of Cambridge)

DESCRIPTION:The discovery of an unexpectedly high nitrogen-to-oxygen (N/O)
ratio in a z=10.6 galaxy GN-z11 presents new challenges to our understand
ing of star formation in the early universe. By analysing publicly availab
le NIRSpec data\, we have identified two additional galaxies at redshifts
z=6.23-8.68 exhibiting supersolar N/O ratios\, significantly exceeding tho
se of local galaxies with similar metallicities. We emphasise that these n
itrogen enrichment is also relative to carbon\, suggesting a predominance
of material processed through the CNO cycle. This talk will also review ap
proximately ten galaxies at z>6 now reported to have supersolar N/O ratios
\, examining shared characteristics that may elucidate the origins of this
distinct nitrogen enrichment and propose connections to hard ionising sou
rces\, dense gas\, and globular cluster formation.
