DESCRIPTION:This Cambridge Immunology and Medicine Seminar wil
l take place on Thursday 24 October 2024\, startin
g at 4:00pm\, in the Theo Chalmers Lecture Theatre
  (LT2)\, School of Clinical Medicine.\n\nSpeaker:
Dr Michelle Linterman\, Babraham Institute\, Cambr
idge\n\nTitle: Endurance of germinal centers in ab
sence of Tfh cells\n\nAbstract: \nT follicular hel
per cells (Tfh) are essential for the formation of
germinal center (GC) reactions\, and positive sel
ection of GC B cells. Interrogating their role in
an ongoing GC reaction has been challenging as few
in vivo models manipulate Tfh cells in establishe
d GCs. Here\, we use an Il21 fate mapping (Il21-fm
) mouse to genetically target Tfh cells enabling t
heir deletion at the peak of the GC reaction. We s
how that although Tfh cells are required for drivi
ng ongoing GC B cell proliferation\, an establishe
d GC can withstand their temporary absence. The re
generative capacity of Tfh cells results in rejuve
nation of the GC and return of affinity maturation
. This recovery suggests the GC has evolved to cop
e with environmental stresses such as co-infection
 -associated immune-suppression\, ensuring the gene
ration of enduring humoral immunity.\n\n\nHost: Ge
 org Petkau\, Babraham Institute\, Cambridge\n\nRef
reshments will be available before the seminar.
