DESCRIPTION:Paul Linden is the chair of the Mechanical and Aer
ospace Engineering Department at the UCSD Jacobs S
chool of Engineering\, where he is the Blasker Pro
fessor of Environmental Science and Engineering. H
e also is director of UCSD's Environment and Susta
inability Initiative and a fellow of both the Amer
ican Physical Society and the Royal Meteorological
Society. Prior to joining UCSD in 1998\, Linden w
as a faculty member in the Department of Applied M
athematics and Theoretical Physics at the Universi
ty of Cambridge\, where he earned his Ph.D. in 197
 1\n\nProfessor Linden's research has applications
in geophysical\, environmental and industrial engi
neering. The flows encountered in natural and indu
strial contexts are usually turbulent and have var
iations in density which produce strong buoyancy f
orces. Linden's research focuses on the physical p
rocesses involved to obtain a greater understandin
g of the underlying principles governing these flo
ws. He has applied his work in fluid dynamics to e
nvironmental engineering to create more "energy ef
 ficient" buildings.\n
