DESCRIPTION:RSEs frequently help researchers who deal with lar
ge amounts of data\, yet discussions about how the
data should be managed\, described\, or catalogue
d are still often ignored. There is a wide range o
 f technical solutions\, policies\, and best practi
ces that can be used\, and these can be slightly o
verwhelming to explore. In this talk\, I’ll brief
ly explain why it’s important to understand the di
fferent types of metadata\, before covering the pr
actical ways that RSEs can support researchers\, a
nd introduce some of the international standards w
hich are starting to be adopted to help ensure som
e consistency. I’ll use examples from a number of
projects that I’ve been involved in that have supp
orted different domains\, and also highlight some
of the issues I’ve encountered along the way.\n\nT
