DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, two approaches have substan
 tially influenced the direction of autism research
 : precision medicine in psychiatry and the neurodi
 versity paradigm.\nPrecision medicine aims to impr
 ove early detection\, diagnosis and prognosis\, as
  well as develop mechanism-based therapies tailore
 d to individual needs/ characteristics using bioma
 rkers.  EU-AIMS and AIMS-2-TRIALS are two linked E
 uropean consortia that have been at the forefront 
 of this global effort.\nIn this talk\, I will shar
 e some reflections on progress and challenges. Sig
 nificant advancements include larger\, comprehensi
 vely characterised cohorts from infancy to adultho
 od\, new methods to make predictions about individ
 uals and identify subgroups and increased methodol
 ogical rigour.  However\, in our studies\, we did 
 not identify single modality markers that have suf
 ficient accuracy for any clinical application.   T
 his may be due to both methodological factors\, in
 cluding granularity and reliability of measures\, 
 and conceptual factors\, such as the predominant r
 eductionist approach\, which seeks to parse comple
 x issues into simpler\, more tractable units. By s
 tudying particular processes in isolation (e.g.\, 
 social or sensory processes) we often neglect thei
 r interactions\, while the focus on individual-lev
 el markers has led us to divorce the (autistic) pe
 rson from their social environment.  \n \nIn paral
 lel\, the neurodiversity paradigm has highlighted 
 the need to shift away from deficit models to unde
 rstanding diversity in perception\, cognition and 
 experiences. It emphasised the role of social and 
 contextual factors in strengths and disabilities a
 nd advocated for active involvement of autistic pe
 ople as research collaborators in defining priorit
 ies and conduct of research.\n \nDrawing upon insi
 ghts from system biology\, developmental psycholog
 y and social sciences I outline an integrative app
 roach. It aims to understand the dynamic interacti
 on between biological (brain\, body) and social me
 chanisms (stress\, stigma\, protective factors) to
  gain a fuller understanding of strengths and diff
 iculties of neurodivergent people in different con
 ditions and contexts.  \n
