DESCRIPTION:The notion of completely reducible (cr for short)
subgroups of an algebraic group G was introduced b
y Serre in the 1990s. Such a G-cr subgroup is a na
tural generalisation of a subgroup of GL(V) acting
completely reducibly on V. Many general results w
ere proved by Bate\, Martin\, Roehrle and others o
n G-cr subgroups. My research has focused on clas
sifying connected reductive subgroups of algebraic
groups\, with complete reducibility giving a pola
risation of the problem into different flavour sub
problems. After discussing these topics in general
\, I will discuss ongoing work with Alastair Litte
rick on how to use these classifications (and subg
roup structure information in general) to improve
general results on completely reducible subgroups
to small characteristics.
