DESCRIPTION:This seminar takes another look at Gothic marginal
ia\, casting a critical eye on the existing body o
f critical interpretation of them. It will develop
the thought that many marginalia are not necessar
ily products of\npopular culture but rather of enc
losed groups familiar with high literary conventio
ns\, and that models which persist in seeing margi
nalia as subversive or collusive are actually stro
ngly a priori in character\, relying on a conventi
onal definition of what the aesthetics of the cent
re\, as opposed to the margin\, may in fact have b
 een.\n\n
