DESCRIPTION:Effective pandemic communication depends on having
  a sound\, evidence-informed response strategy. Su
ch communication was particularly important for su
pporting New Zealand’s elimination approach. Equit
y and partnership with communities is critical. Ef
 fective communication supports coordinated deliver
y of interventions adapted to each phase of the re
sponse and builds trust. \n\nKey tools include the
use of ‘framing’ in designing media messages and
approaches for responding to misinformation and di
sinformation. In our increasingly outraged informa
tion environment\, there is a need to protect the
messenger. It is important that we document what
we have learned to improve our responses to future
public health threats and opportunities.\n\nBio n
ote: Prof. Michael Baker is a public health physic
ian and Professor of Public Health at the Universi
 ty of Otago\, Wellington\, NZ. \n\nHe is a member
of the NZ Government’s Covid-19 Technical Advisor
y Group. Michael was a leading advocate for the el
imination strategy in NZ. He is an active research
er on the pandemic and principal investigator for
 the Covid-19 Research Collaborative (Co-Search).\n
\nIn February 2023\, Michael launched the Public H
ealth Communication Centre\, Aotearoa (PHCC). The
PHCC aims to support evidence-informed policy\, im
 prove Government decision-making processes\, infor
m the public about health issues\, and provide som
 e protection from disinformation. \n\nAdditional d
