DESCRIPTION:I will discuss joint work with Bell\, Diller\, and
  Jonsson in which we construct birational maps of 
 3-d projective space which have transcendental dyn
 amical degree\, providing counterexamples to a con
 jecture of Bellon-Viallet.  The constructed maps p
 reserve a torus-invariant volume form\, and we wil
 l discuss the algebraic stability and dynamical de
 grees of such maps more generally.
