DESCRIPTION:The James Webb Space Telescope is giving us an unprecedented v
iew into the early phases of galaxy formation. I will review the motivati
ons for why a large cold infrared-optimized telescope in space has been th
e dream of high-redshift astronomers for 25 years and give a tour of some
of the data. I'll then describe the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Surv
ey\, which is performing very deep imaging and multi-object spectroscopy i
n the regions in and around the Hubble Deep Field and Ultra Deep Field\, f
ocusing on some of the early highlights from the survey\, extending to z~1
 3.
