DESCRIPTION:The Highland Boundary Fault (HBF) delineates a fun
damental division\n in the topography and surface
geology in Scotland\, separating 1000-\n500Ma meta
morphic rocks to the north from predominantly ~440
-\n360Ma sedimentary rocks of the Midland Valley t
o the south. Despite \ndetailed geological mapping
of the HBF and surrounding areas\, the \nrole(s)
of the HBF in the tectonic history of Scotland is
contested. \n\nTo investigate crustal structure ac
ross the HBF and any seismicity in \nthe region in
spring 2022 we deployed a new network of 10 \nsei
smometers in north eastern Scotland as part of the
PICTS (Probing \nInto the Crust Through eastern S
 cotland) project\, which\, together with\n a BGS S
eismology permanent station\, DRUM\, form three tr
ansects \nacross the HBF. These instruments form t
he first dense seismometer \ndeployment in this re
gion and data from them will allow us to place \nh
igh-resolution constraints on the structure of the
crust and \nuppermost mantle across the HBF\, det
ermine crustal thickness in this\n region\, and to
investigate if any seismicity is occurring on the
eastern\n portion of the HBF. Preliminary results
from crustal receiver functions \nindicate that t
he crystal structure is different to the north and
  the \nsouth of the HBF.
