DESCRIPTION:Many owl species rely on specialized plumage to mi
 tigate their aerodynamic noise and achieve functio
 nally-silent flight while hunting. One such plumag
 e feature\, a tattered arrangement of flexible tra
 iling-edge feathers\, is idealized as a semi-infin
 ite poroelastic plate to model the effects that ed
 ge compliance and flow seepage have on the noise p
 roduction. The associated acoustic scattering prob
 lem is solved to identify how the noise scales wit
 h the flight velocity\, where special attention is
  paid to the limiting cases of rigid-porous and el
 astic-impermeable plate conditions. Results from t
 his analysis identify new parameter spaces where t
 he porous and/or elastic properties of a trailing 
 edge may be tailored to diminish or effectively el
 iminate the edge scattering effect and may contrib
 ute to the owl hush-kit. In complement to the acou
 stic analysis\, steady and unsteady aerodynamic mo
 dels including wing porosity are formulated and so
 lved in anticipation of the potential trade-off of
  aerodynamic performance and acoustic stealth. The
  aerodynamic analysis yields porous extensions of 
 the classical unsteady aerodynamic functions and f
 urther indicates how porosity may be used as a pas
 sive gust rejection strategy.\n
