DESCRIPTION:Configuration spaces are tools to study manifolds
"a few points at a time" and their homology can ca
pture more information than the homology of a spac
e itself. I will defend this claim by focusing on
how the homology of configuration spaces of surfac
es viewed as representations of the surface mappin
g class group "sees deeper into" the mapping class
group than does the homology of the surface. We w
ill see two approaches for doing this: one more al
gebraic\, through mapping spaces\, and one more co
 nstructive and pictorial.
