DESCRIPTION:Over 2 billion years ago banded iron formations (B
 IF) developed as a consequence of aqueous iron (Fe
 II) precipitating due\, in part\, to the new prese
 nce of oxygen in the Archaen ocean. The outstandin
 g question is how long did it take for the precipi
 tates to rain out of the ocean column\, setting on
 to the ocean floor to form BIF? We examine an idea
 lisation of this circumstance by performing labora
 tory experiments in which a solution of ferrous ch
 loride (FeCl2) is combined with a solution of sodi
 um hydroxide (NaOH). If the limiting concentration
  of one of these two solutions is small\, tiny pre
 cipitates of “rust” (Fe(OH)3) form\, which slowly 
 settle. At larger concentrations\, however\, the p
 recipitates accumulate into progressively larger f
 locs that initially settle rapidly\, but then form
  convective flow patterns. Understanding these dyn
 amics is a work in progress.\n \n
