DESCRIPTION:In standard 2-derivative GR coupled to matter obey
ing the Null Energy condition\, the Bekenstein-Haw
king definition of the entropy of a black hole can
be proved to satisfy a Second Law of Black Hole M
echanics. However\, if we consider higher derivati
ve theories of gravity this no longer necessarily
holds. \nIn recent work\, Hollands\, KovĂˇcs and Re
all have built on previous work of Wall to provide
a definition of dynamical black hole entropy for
gravitational effective field theories (EFTs). Thi
s entropy satisfies a Second Law to quadratic orde
r in perturbations around a stationary black hole.
In this talk I will present the construction of t
he entropy\, some explicit calculations for partic
ular theories including Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet that
I have performed\, and the problem of gauge invar
iance for this definition. The talk is based off t
he recent paper arxiv.org/abs/2212.09777.
