DESCRIPTION:I will review some examples of why different kinds
of probability distributions emerge in Earth obse
rvations\, and moreover how leveraging such distri
butions can be useful. Examples will include ocean
  turbulence and biogeochemistry\, lake morphometry
\, and paleoclimate\, and span from simple and cla
ssical probability distributions such as the log-n
ormal to complex and unfamiliar distributions such
as those arising from fractional Brownian motion.
