DESCRIPTION:Synapse loss is the strongest pathological correla
te of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease (AD
) and genetic data strongly implicate both amyloid
beta and changes in microglia in disease pathogen
esis. In this talk\, Prof Spires-Jones will talk a
bout her work showing that (1) Amyloid beta (Ab) a
ccumulates in synapses and contributes to synapse
loss\, (2) APOE4 and CLU risk genes associated wit
h synapse loss\, (3) Astrocytes and microglia inge
st synapses in human AD brain\, and (4) Blocking M
FGE8 binding integrin receptors reduces human syna
pse phagocytosis by microglia and astrocytes.\n
