DESCRIPTION:This talk will be about my recent book _The Two Cu
ltures Controversy: Science\, Literature and Cultu
ral Politics in Postwar Britain_ (Cambridge\, 2009
 ). Ever since the scientist-turned-novelist C.P. S
now clashed with literary critic F.R. Leavis in th
e early 1960s\, it has been a commonplace to lamen
t that intellectual life is divided between 'two c
ultures'\, the arts and sciences. Yet why did a to
pic that had long been discussed inspire such fero
cious controversy at this particular moment? This
talk answers that question by recasting this dispu
te as an ideological conflict between competing vi
sions of Britain's past\, present and future. By e
xcavating the political stakes of the 'two culture
s' controversy\, this talk seeks to explain the wo
rkings of cultural politics during the 1960s more
generally\, while also revising the meaning of a t
erm that continues to be evoked to this day.
