DESCRIPTION:Variational discretizations are known for preservi
ng key physical invariants in a natural way\, lead
ing to long-time stability properties. In this tal
k I will present a discrete action principle for t
he Vlasov-Maxwell equations that applies in a gene
 ral structure-preserving discrete framework.\nIn t
 his framework the finite-dimensional electromagnet
ic potentials and fields are represented in a disc
rete de Rham sequence involving general Finite Ele
ment spaces\, and the particle-field coupling is r
epresented by a set of projection operators that c
ommute with the differential operators.\nOne appli
cation of this approach is a new variational spect
ral PIC method that has a discrete Hamiltonian str
ucture and relies on particle-field coupling techn
iques very similar to those encountered in standar
 d PIC schemes.
