SUMMARY:Nano Comes to Life: How nanotechnology ushers phys
ics into biology\, transforming medicine\, and per
haps even the future of computing - Prof Sonia Ant

DESCRIPTION:How and why do we design and build artificial stru
ctures and even machines at the nanoscale using DN
A\, proteins\, and other biological molecules or c
onstruct hybrid bio-inorganic robots using the bui
lding principles of biology? Prof Contera will exp
lore how nanotechnology is revolutionising medicin
e in ways that will have profound effects on our h
ealth. From nanostructures inspired by biology th
at can train the immune system to fight cancer or
a viral infection\, to nanoantibiotics that can el
iminate resistant bacteria\, to the engineering o
f tissues and organs for research\, drug discovery
\, and transplantation. More profoundly\, nanotech
facilitates the study of biology within the frame
work of physics\, thereby creating interfaces with
other fields (e.g. bioinspired quantum devices an
d computer science). This will potentially change
not only the future of materials\, engineering and
AI\, but also the way we think about life itself\
, and give us confidence to pose questions such a
s “what is intuition?” from a physics lab.
