DESCRIPTION:In this talk Paul Freeman will describe the pathop
hysiology and principles of treatment of intervert
ebral disc disease in dogs\, a very common and nat
urally occurring cause of often severe and sometim
es irreversible spinal cord injury. Treatment of t
his disease is controversial\, and the focus of Pa
ul’s research is an attempt to answer some of thos
e controversies and provide an improved framework
for management of such cases. The talk will attemp
t to illustrate the current state of evidence and
some of the difficulties in interpreting this\, in
particular with respect to the most severe grade
of injury. Electrical stimulation has been used fo
r many years in human spinal cord disease\, and cu
rrently Paul is involved in a project which aims t
o develop a novel mode of stimulation with the pot
ential to cause spinal cord regeneration\, althoug
h the engineering challenges are not insignificant
. Paul will finish with a brief mention of a furth
er project in collaboration with Prof George Malli
aras’ lab\, aimed at an improved delivery of chemo
 therapeutic agents into brain tumours.’
