DESCRIPTION:Repetition increases belief in false statements. T
his illusory truth effect occurs with many differe
nt types of statements (e.g.\, trivia facts\, news
headlines\, advertisements)\, and even occurs whe
n the false statement contradicts participants’ pr
ior knowledge. I will present a series of studies
demonstrating that the effects of repetition are
widespread – occurring for even very implausible s
 tatements\, occurring in naturalistic settings\, a
nd occurring across development. However\, the eff
ects are not inevitable\, I will also discuss situ
ations where the repetition has only a minimal eff
 ect on belief. \n
