DESCRIPTION:Increasing computing power and established numeric
al modelling techniques drive the numerical modell
ing in continuum mechanics beyond the basics of st
ructural analysisand fluid flow. Software implemen
tation of complex and coupled physical poses chall
enges beyond the current generation of simulation
tools. A new\, flexible and efficient model implem
entation framework is needed. One possible answer
is object orientation. OpenFOAM (Field Operation A
nd Manipulation) is an open source object-oriented
numerical simulation library aimed at complex phy
sics modelling and will be described in this semin
ar. \n\nOpenFOAM handles continuum models by mimic
king partial differential equations in software. P
olyhedral Finite Volume discretisation is implemen
ted in operator form (e.g. temporal derivatives\,
 gradient\, divergence\, source and sink terms)\, a
nd operators are combined to form equations. Effic
iency and elegance in implementation is achieved t
hrough layered development and extensive code re-u
 se\, where various components (e.g. mesh handling\
 , field algebra and calculus\, discretisation\, li
near algebra and solvers\, dynamic meshing etc.)
are developed and validated in isolation.\n\nAuxil
iary tools support the basic solvers\, providing
pre- and post-processing interfaces\, dynamic mes
 h handling\, real material properties\, massive p
arallelism\, Lagrangian particle model and other t
ools present in a modern CFD solver. The library i
s completed with a suite of physical models\, cove
 ring incompressible\, compressible\, multi-phase a
nd free surface fluid flow\, a suite of 30 RANS an
 d LES turbulence models\, combustion\, spray and i
 n-cylinder simulations\, structural analysis\, ele
 ctromagnetics and fluid-structure interaction.\n\n
Today\, OpenFOAM is a leading Open Source CFD tool
\, rapidly expanding in the research community and
among industrial users. The talk will be complete
d with examples of application of OpenFOAM in flui
d flow and structural analysis and a review of con
tributing organisations\, active research areas an
 d future development plans.
