DESCRIPTION:It is a classical problem in fluid dynamics about
the stability and instability of hydrodynamic patt
erns in various physical settings\, in particular
the inviscid limit of laminar flow and boundary la
yer. The study can be traced back to the early wor
k by Lord Rayleigh and Heisenberg among many other
s. On the other hand\, one of the powerful analyti
c tools initiated by Sommerfeld and Orr is the spe
ctral analysis by studying the Fourier normal mode
behavior through the famous Orr-Sommerfeld equati
on derived from the linearization of the incompres
sible Navier-Stokes equations. In this talk\, we w
ill present some recent study on the Orr-Sommerfel
d system derived from the linearization of the MHD
system around a shear flow profile in different p
hysical regimes and then investigate some differen
t or similar stability and instability phenomena c
ompared with the Navier-Stokes equations. The stud
y also reveals the effect of the magnetic field on
stability in different situations.
