DESCRIPTION:Systems in contact with multiple reservoirs fall i
n nonequilibrium states characterized by sustained
currents of energy and matter. While in small sys
tems thermal fluctuations are accounted for by Mas
 ter (or Fokker-Planck) equations\, in infinite-siz
e systems the dynamics is described by determinist
ic rate equations which may display\, inter alia\,
multistability and limit cycles. At large but fin
ite sizes\, nonequilibrium conditions induce meta
stability\, namely\, small fluctuations within mac
roscopic attractors and rare random transitions be
tween them. This is the regime of interest for man
y natural and man-made systems\, ranging from (bio
)chemical reaction networks to electronic circuits
. Using concepts of large deviations theory\, I wi
ll explain such nonequilibrium emergent behavior f
rom the microscopic stochastic dynamics and descri
be how (stochastic) thermodynamics can be consiste
ntly formulated through all levels of description.
