 r*\n\nAnthony Cross was a Professor of Slavonic St
 udies at the University of Cambridge for 19 years 
 and retired in 2004. He was previously Lecturer\, 
 Senior Lecturer and Reader in Russian at the Unive
 rsity of East Anglia 1964-1981 and subsequently Ro
 berts Professor of Russian at the University of Le
 eds 1981-1985.\n\nHe was elected to the British Ac
 ademy in 1989 and to the Russian Academy of Humani
 ties in 1996. He received an Honorary Doctorate fr
 om the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russ
 ian Academy of Sciences (Pushkin House) in 2010. I
 nternationally known for his work on eighteenth-ce
 ntury Russia and Anglo-Russian cultural relations\
 , he founded the Study Group on Eighteenth-Century
  Russia in 1968 and edited the Group’s annual News
 letter from 1973 to 2009. Professor Cross has writ
 ten and edited some twenty-five books and has publ
 ished over four hundred articles\, notes and revie
 ws. Among his principal publications are: _N. M. K
