DESCRIPTION:The Chinese legal system plays a crucial role in b
 uilding China's\npolitical\, economic\, and social
  foundations. Despite its authoritarian\nnature\,
the Chinese Party-state claims to envision rule-ba
sed\ngovernance in China. But what is the relevanc
e of Chinese law to the\ndiscourse of the rule of
law ideals in western countries? How can we\nasses
s the effects of China’s legal change in the past
century and\,\nabove all\, in the past four decade
s? To what extent does China’s\nconstitutional arr
angement also fulfil the paragon of “separation of
\npower” and “checks and balances”? This talk will
explore the concept\nof Chinese law in historical
context\, examine the basic structure of\nthe Par
ty-state\, and provide an overview of certain crit
ical aspects\nof Chinese law that would inform a g
 eneral understanding of China's\nlegal system.\n\n
