DESCRIPTION:Drawing on anthropological theories of ritual and 
 state\, as\nwell as fieldwork data collected in Be
 ijing\, the paper examines two\ndisplays of cultur
 al performance at the Opening and Closing Ceremoni
 es\nof the Beijing Olympics respectively. Through 
 a discussion of the\nceremonies as public rituals 
 communicating both the ancient and modern\nhistory
  of China\, its philosophy and politics of 'Harmon
 y'\, and the\nnational sentiments arising from the
  country's "hundred-year humiliation"\,\nthe paper
  hopes to provide an anthropological perspective t
 o consider\nthe emerging world power\, as well as 
 to extend the conceptual framework\nof ritual in t
 he context of the Beijing Olympics.\n\n
