DESCRIPTION:Hearing loss affects about 10% of the adult popula
 tion in the UK and many people over the age of 70 
 years have a hearing loss sufficient for them to r
 equire hearing aids. Yet\, many people try hearing
  aids and decide that the benefit is not worth the
  bother\; the hearing aids end up sitting in a dra
 wer. In this talk I will describe what goes wrong 
 when a person has a hearing loss and I will descri
 be what hearing aids can and cannot do to compensa
 te for the perceptual problems caused by hearing l
 oss. Avenues for improvement will also be describe
 d.
