DESCRIPTION:This conference seeks to create dialogue between t
wo forms of expertise. It will bring together peop
le with lived experience of mental health challeng
es and researchers\, with the aim of starting conv
ersations between these two groups of experts. We
also recognise that many people belong in both gro
ups.\n\nOur theme is the link between social power
and mental health. Disempowered social groups are
at an increased risk of mental health issues. The
y are more likely to face difficult economic\, soc
ial and environmental conditions. Gender\, ethnici
ty\, sexuality\, disabilities and social class int
ersect with these. What are the latest research fi
ndings on these topics? How do they compare with l
ived experiences? When might research worsen menta
l health challenges? What kinds of methods can pro
duce empowerment?\n\nWe will also reflect on the s
ocial context of mental health\, power and inequal
ity. While mental wellbeing is now being discussed
widely\, stigma remains significant. And people w
ho are already disempowered are much more likely t
o be labelled ‘mentally ill’. How does stigma link
to social power? What is the role of psychiatric
services and the welfare state? How are power ineq
ualities reinforced\, and how can we challenge the
m? How do we work towards a future where everyone
can openly share their lived experiences\, be valu
ed for their contribution and appropriately suppor
ted in their endeavours?\n\nThe conference has bee
n designed with people who have used psychiatric s
ervices in Cambridgeshire. Our speakers include so
 cial scientists\, psychiatrists\, psychologists an
 d service users/survivors. Throughout there will b
e group discussions with local people who have exp
erience of mental health challenges.\n\nOur intent
is for people with lived experience to take the l
ead as we explore the many intersections between m
ental health and social power. The conference aims
to place research expertise and the expertise of
experience on an equal footing. We want to work to
gether to find gaps in knowledge\, and then outlin
e a future research agenda to address these. How c
an we challenge power inequalities in\, and throug
h\, research? And how can we evolve research by va
luing lived experience?\n\n \n\nPlease let us know
if you have any access requirements that you woul
d like to discuss with us. Financial support is av
ailable for people who are unwaged or on low incom
 es.
