DESCRIPTION:After decades of work by many people\, the success
es of Matrix Group Recognition Projects and their
implementations in the CompositionTree package a
llow\, for the first time\, to compute efficiently
with large matrix groups (defined over finite fi
elds). A crucial ingredient in those algorithms i
s the constructive recognition of classical groups
. I will survey some of those results and then co
mment in more detail on my work (with Eamonn O&#3
9\;Brien and Charles Leedham-Green) for finding st
 andard generators in classical groups.
