DESCRIPTION:Viscoplastic or yield stress materials can behave
like solids or fluids. Such materials\, if not suf
ficiently stressed\, behave like an elastic solid\
, but once the stress exceeds a critical value (th
e yield stress)\, the material deforms like a visc
ous fluid (typically with a nonlinear viscosity).\
n\nWe will discuss the effect of the yield stress
on spreading droplets. We use experiments\, asympt
otic solutions\, and numerical simulations to expl
ain the dynamics and final shape of the droplets.
Later\, we will show how one can externally contro
l the shape of a spreading droplet\, using tempera
ture. For that\, we will first present the rheolog
ical properties of a thermo-responsive material th
 at undergoes sol(Newtonian)-gel(yield stress) tran
sition upon heating. Then\, we show the final dia
meter of a thermo-responsive droplet can be contro
lled by simply changing the surface temperature. I
n the same part\, we introduce an experimental met
hod based on optical coherence tomography to ident
ify the solidified region inside a droplet.\n\nEve
ntually\, we will briefly discuss the other applic
 ations of viscoplastic droplets.
