DESCRIPTION:The survivability of all marine structures\, both 
 fixed and floating\, is critically dependent upon 
 an accurate representation of the ocean environmen
 t and the effective prediction of the applied flui
 d loads. A critical part of this relates to the de
 scription of extremes\, both in terms of individua
 l surface waves and isolated loading events\; the 
 largest waves not necessarily giving rise to the l
 argest loads.\n\nThe presentation will introduce a
  wide range of data sources\, highlighting the adv
 antages and uncertainties associated with each. Th
 ese will include field measurements\, laboratory o
 bservations and numerical calculations. By combini
 ng these data types\, new insights will be provide
 d into the physics of both extreme waves and the w
 aves responsible for the largest loading events. S
 pecific attention will be paid to the occurrence o
 f wave breaking and its practical implications.\n\
 nWith improved physical understanding and new mode
 lling procedures\, the adequacy of present design 
 practice will be explored and alternative solution
  procedures proposed. The presentation will conclu
 de by showing how complementary data sources can f
 acilitate the solution of complex problems\, domin
 ated by nonlinearity and statistical uncertainty\;
  the final results having significant implications
  for the assessment of structures on the UK contin
 ental shelf.\n
