DESCRIPTION:A paradox of our digital age is that while we can access the o
lder literature more easily than ever before\, all too often our focus is
only on the latest postings to the arXiv. In this talk\, Professor Ray Gol
dstein discusses the benefits that can come from reading the old literatur
e - besides being extremely interesting\, they can often reveal motivation
s that have been lost in time. Professor Goldstein is currently the Schlum
berger Professor of Complex Physical Systems in the Department of Applied
Mathematics and Theoretical Physics\, University of Cambridge. His interdi
sciplinary research focuses on biological physics\, tying in theoretical p
hysics with problems of evolutionary biology\, developmental biology\, and
aspects of nonequilibrium phenomena unique to living systems.
LOCATION:Pfizer Lecture Theatre\, Department of Chemistry\, Lensfield Road
