DESCRIPTION:Pregnancy is regarded by health researchers as a k
ey period in which to begin studies focusing on th
 e child\, configuring the pregnant person’s body a
s the child’s first ‘environment.’ This presentati
on explores the history of efforts to enroll pregn
ant women in research studies focused on child hea
lth\, exploring the role such studies play in the
broader reproductive biopolitics aimed at governin
g pregnant bodies. Drawing on interviews with moth
ers\, health professionals and scientists\, and ar
chival materials from a longitudinal study of chil
d health in the south west of the UK\, the present
ation considers how the concept of the ‘foetal env
ironment’ was materialised through the collection
of tissues such as cord blood and placenta. In thi
s way\, the paper calls for renewed attention to t
he reproductive histories of population geography.
