DESCRIPTION:Nick Davies\, a well-known and award-winning inves
tigative journalist\, has recently published "Flat
  Earth News":http://www.flatearthnews.net/\, a con
troversial and highly-critical analysis of the Bri
tish news media in which he argues that the busine
ss of truth has been "slowly subverted by the mass
production of ignorance". The book examines nati
onal news stories which\, Davies argues\, "turn ou
t to be pseudo events manufactured by the PR indus
try and the global news stories which prove to be
fiction generated by a new machinery of internatio
nal propaganda." With the help of researchers fro
m Cardiff University\, who ran a detailed analysis
of the contents and sources for our daily news\,
Davies found that "most reporters most of the time
are not allowed to dig up stories or check their
facts"\, leading him to describe UK journalism as
"a profession corrupted at the core". In the book
\, he also presents a new model for understanding
news. \n\nWe have invited Nick Davies to present h
is critique to an academic audience. We have also
  invited "John Kelly":http://voxford.blogspot.com/
\, a well-known _Washington Post_ columnist who is
currently a Reuters Fellow at Oxford\, to comment
on the issues from a non-UK perspective. \n\nThe
seminar will be chaired by Dr Phil Parvin of the
Department of Social and Political Sciences\, whos
e research interests include the relationship betw
 een media and democratic institutions.
