DESCRIPTION:CRISPR/Cas9\, a recently discovered DNA editing system\, is re
volutionising biological research across\nmedicine\, agriculture and funda
mental cell biology. It is employed to disable a selected gene to test\nwh
ether this affects a particular cell function\, such as development or can
cerous growth. Large-scale\nexperimental designs allow gene inactivation t
o be carried out in pools of human or other eukaryotic\ncell lines\, such
that each and every gene is tested simultaneously\, in a comprehensive\, u
nbiased\nfashion.\nThe first speaker will:\n• Give an introduction to CR
ISPR/Cas9 and how it works\n• Explain how CRISPR/Cas9 can be used at sca
le to screen for genes relevant to a biological function\nThe second speak
er will:\n• Describe research examining and predicting the precise DNA m
utations induced by CRISPR/Cas9\n• Outline how this can be used to produ
ce better gene knock-outs and effective genetic screens
