DESCRIPTION:Skills: How -not- to review a paper\, Ioannis Chat
zigeorgiou\n\nThe objective of this talk is to dem
onstrate that writing a good review is often more
challenging than writing a good paper. We provide
a few tips on how to review a paper and many examp
les of poor quality reviews based on which we conc
lude that rejections and occasionally acceptances\
, should not always be taken seriously.\n\nResearc
h: Giving off the Right Signals!\, Simon Fothergil
l\n\nI will present my recent research in the cont
ext of my proposed thesis. It will contain materi
al in practice for my keynote session presentation
at the Jesus College Graduate Conference at 5pm o
 n Friday 2nd May. \n \nCapturing the movements of
a person whilst they are performing a physical tas
k can provide signals from which it may be possibl
e to infer the quality of the technique used durin
g the performance. A value or description of this
quality would allow applications to coach sports
or surgical technique or help avoid injury. \n \nR
ather than using expensive or unavailable biomecha
nical models to translate the movements into a mor
e meaningful format\, a more abstract model is lea
rnt from expertly labeled examples of athletes' pe
rforming indoor rowing. The judgment of the quali
ty of individual aspects of the technique is compa
red with the expert labeling for a number of popul
 ations of strokes.
