DESCRIPTION:Most pieces of apparatus used by ancient Greek mus
ical theorists to illustrate and sometimes to test
their hypotheses were very simple\, but one of th
em\, described in considerable detail by the great
scientist Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD\, is much
more complex and interesting. In his talk Profes
sor Barker will present and discuss his home-made
reconstruction of this unusual instrument\, with p
ractical demonstrations of what it can (and cannot
) do.\n\nThis talk is presented by the Whipple Mus
eum's Science of Musical Sound Project and is open
  to all.
